Who tried to kill Katherine?
Locked In was a big draw on Netflix in November 2023, but if you're just catching up on the movie now, you might be left with some big questions.
At times, you might even wonder if it was a combination of all three, before a final act that changes everything you thought you knew with a major death.
With Locked In taking place across multiple timelines, we wouldn't blame you for getting a bit lost in the mystery. So that's where we come in to help by untangling the timelines and explaining who tried to kill Katherine and why.
Major spoilers ahead for Locked In if you haven't seen it yet.
The movie starts with Katherine in hospital after being hit with a car which has left her with locked-in syndrome. However, she can blink one of her eyes and her nurse Nicky (Anna Friel) gets her to use an alphabet board to spell out that someone tried to murder her.
Locked In then flashes back to how Katherine got into this situation, starting 13 years earlier when she became legal guardian to Lina. Katherine's late husband left everything to his son Jamie, including their home Rowling Manor, so when Lina marries Jamie 10 years later, Katherine is suspicious.
Lina is hardly happy with their marriage, acting more of a servant to Jamie due to his ill health, so she begins sleeping with Robert. He comes up with a scheme to kill Jamie and stage it like an accident, meaning that Lina will get control of Rowling Manor and the family fortune.
His plan works as Jamie drowns in the lake when Robert intentionally capsizes their boat and holds Jamie underwater. When Lina threatens to leave Robert, he warns her that he'll reveal her journal, where she wrote of how she hates Jamie and wants to kill him.
It all comes to a head when Lina spots Katherine snogging Robert one night, leading to Robert attacking Lina. She manages to break out of the house and run away, but both Robert (in his car) and Katherine (on horseback) follow.
While it first appears like both Robert and Katherine want to kill Lina, it's revealed that Katherine tried to stop Robert by shooting out his tyre. Katherine tries to persuade Robert to leave Lina alone, but his response is to run Katherine over.
Locked In then catches up with the scene at the start of the movie where Nicky starts to find out the truth. Lina, thinking Katherine tried to kill her, persuades Robert to help her take Katherine home before the police arrive.
Robert comes up with the idea of killing Katherine at home by faking a stroke with an overdose. Before he can do so though, Nicky manages to call Lina and tell her the truth about that fateful night, with Katherine confirming it to Lina with a blink.
Lina asks Robert to let her kill Katherine, only to inject Robert with the drugs. It's not enough to kill him, but Lina stabs him to make sure of it.
