The blue blur is coming back...
These days, video game movies are much better than they were in the 1990s and early 2000s, when they were misguided and notoriously bad. The popular Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise, which began in 2020 with a video game adaptation that surprised everyone with its quality and financial success and was followed by an equally impressive box office and critical reception in 2022, has been one of the biggest contributors to this enormous sea change. Given how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 concluded, it was all but certain that the recognizable blue blur would return.
The release date was disclosed in a caption accompanying a gif of the blue blur, sidekick Tails, and enemy-turned-friend Knuckles that was posted on the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie Twitter account in August 2022. This will pit Sonic and friends against the only other movie scheduled for release that weekend, the much anticipated Mufasa: The Lion King by Barry Jenkins, an upcoming Disney picture.
Both the 2022 sequel and the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which some believe to be the greatest video game movie ever filmed, had amazing tales with tons of action, passion, and humor that made them feel like classic Sega Genesis games. There are many reasons to be enthusiastic about Sonic the Hedgehog 3, even though we don't yet know what will happen in it.
Firstly on that list? Yes, that shadowy entity that was hinted at during the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 post-credits sequence is Shadow the Hedgehog. The role that the audience's favorite malevolent figure will play in the events of the film is still unknown.
